Alcohol use describes the intake of drinks that contain ethanol, a chemical substance widely known as alcohol. Although limited drinking can be linked with social and cultural activities, consuming large amounts can seriously harm health. Problematic alcohol use includes binge drinking, regular heavy intake, and any drinking by pregnant women or people below the legal drinking age. Alcohol affects many systems of the human body, especially important organs such as the brain, liver, heart, and pancreas. Continuous or excessive drinking can lead to long-term health problems like liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis, heart disorders, and several cancers including those of the liver, mouth, throat, esophagus, and breast. High alcohol intake can also weaken the body’s immune system, making infections easier to develop and increasing the risk of accidents due to impaired thinking and coordination.
